MY QUILTING JOURNEY
Little did I know that at age 11 when I made a yo-yo clown doll
for my new baby brother that I was actually using a quilting technique.
Challenges were presented in Home Ec 7 with having to learn to use
a treadle sewing machine before being allowed on the electrics.
Eye, hand and foot coordination did not come easy and my mother
sent me to a neighbour for remedial sewing!! (Whew, I got it!!)
Then came basting the apron straps that I’m sure stretched
from Vancouver to Hope.
Well, I had to take my basting out because the stitches were longer
than ¼ inch! Oh well, apron finished and onto the cooking
component for that year.
My journey into quilting began many years later when I was a night
school administrator in Vancouver and saw wonderful items coming
out of the quilting class. I had to know more and luck was on my
side when my husband and I bought a house right next door to Dianne
Stevenson, the quilting instructor. I took my first class in 1982
and the rest is history- classes, CQA conferences, workshops, teaching
and more recently working at Satin Moon. With the loss of my husband
in 1985 and cancer shortly after, quilting proved to be a God-send.
Belonging to a small quilt group of friends and then in the late
90’s when the Frazer Valley Quilters Guild developed an evening
Chapter, my horizons expanded even further.
I love working with the vibrant colours and seeing the visual dance.
The friends I have made along the way have been a wonderful support
and inspiration.
Thank you is hardly enough, I am truly grateful to all of you and
hope you enjoy my journey as I have.
