PREPARATION
1. Cover tables (and self with apron)
2. Iron Freezer paper to back of one cloth piece- shiny side down
Paint sticks are oil (more refined, less acidic linseed than artist
sticks) and wax based.
Matt colours are best on light to medium value fabric.
Iridescent are stunning on dark.
Can be used on Natural and synthetic fabrics- unless stain resistant.
MIXING
For maximum light reflection do not mix iridescent with matt, or
use an iridescent blender stick
LIGHTER to darker
Blend with stiff brush (toothbrush) fingers or tissue or fabric.
Can be premixed on a palette (masking tape strips, parchment paper, anything
with a bit of tooth)
FABRIC PREP
Prewash with synthrapol for best readiness, no bleach, softener or starch.
STORING
A skin forms over the exposed stick to protect it.
CARE
Durable once heat set.
SECURE YOUR FABRIC WITH (blue painters) TAPE, OR FREEZER PAPER OR
Totally Stable by Sulky for better control.
Pinch you paint stick to remove the skin DO NOT SNAP (the peelings
are still paint so save to use creatively or dispose of carefully.) Wipe
as you work to keep off crumbs.
Tape will lift paint chips off of fabric.
1 - LINES AND WORDS create a variety of line widths, arcs,
and angles.
a. Peel or sandpaper the skin off of the Shiva stick
b. Use broad bold short lines, hatch, cross hatch , straight ,
curved
c. Create tweed of various colours in short parallel lines. Blend
some areas.
d. Use a paring knife or razor to sharpen an edge, experiment with
thin and thin to thick lines.
e. Use a blender stick to blur some lines.
2 - RUBBINGS enriching the visual surface
a. Find textured fabrics, papers, metals, any surface, commercial rubbing
sheets
Tape your fabric on 3 sides
Place them under the fabric of choice
RUB IN ONE DIRECTION ONLY
Rub the broad (or flat) edge of the Shiva stick over the surface to catch
the highest surfaces, as lightly as possible.
b. Shift the fabric slightly or leave a small amount of overlap
and repeat rubbing with a second colour, with more pressure.
c. Shift or rotate and repeat with a third colour, with
medium to heavy pressure.
d. Blend, blur select areas and colours.
e. Make a rubbing with multiple textures and multiple colours- keep a
light hand.
3 - STENCIL or MASK around a shape
Select a solid fabric
a . Tear a cardboard edge
b . Scrub a “puddle” of Shiva pigment on a toothed surface.
c . Use a paper towel wrapped on your finger tips or a stencil brush to
gather some pigment
d . Apply the pigment by pulling from the cardboard and fading
away sheerly onto the cloth. ( thick to thin pigment application)
e . Move and overlap the stencil line with a new color to create soft
stripes.
f . Add a few accent lines (thick).
g . Select a new piece of cloth.
h. Tear strips if paper or use masking tape, and create plaid with
overlapping horizontal and then vertical lines of halos.
i . Repeat with cut or torn fabric strips. Move, GLUE with bonash
or pin to stitch.
4 - STENCIL inside a shape - stabilised cloth, iron on
to freezer paper
1. Select a plastic stencil or create a paper or freezer paper stencil
(2 “surround).
2. Colour inside the stencil (1 or more blended colours)
3. Make a rubbing inside the stencil (1 or more colours)
4. Halo or fade the Shiva colour with a brush or cloth, into the
center of the stencil to make a transparent looking image (P21).
5. Shift the Stencil, select a darker or complementary colour and colour
partially to create a SHADOW.
CLEANING
Liquid dish soap Citra –Solve is good for soaking brushes, then
paint out the colour onto paper towels and wash with soap..
TO SET
Air Dry 3-5 days
Cover with craft paper and iron on the back side 10-15 seconds with a
dry iron (set with chemical reaction).
Gentle washing will remove residue and restore the hand.
NEVER DRYCLEAN
Further
Try Shiva sticks on other surfaces like handmade papers, lutrador, interfacings,
tyvek.
Make some value studies (light to dark), colour over colour on white,
coloured and
black cloth to see how the Shiva colours interact with various base colours
of fabric.
